Until the 19th century, Katowice was an agricultural village that evolved into a powerful industrial centre when huge deposits of hard coal were discovered underground and the first mines were established. The construction of the railway connected the region with Berlin and Vienna. Most of the mines have been closed and some of them have gained a new life as tourist attractions as underground museums. Traditional Silesian Cuisine

Traditional Silesian cuisine draws some inspiration from Czech, German, Austrian and Jewish cuisine and has many followers due to its simple recipe and its filling properties. The top dishes include mainly Silesian dumplings with roulade and red cabbage. If you’re fond of sour flavours, your stomach will be grateful to you when you treat it with traditional soup - Silesian sour rye soup or chicken broth. We cannot forget about „kwaśnica”, i.e. a stock of sauerkraut and smoked ribs.

Nikiszowiec

The historical legacy of Katowice; a housing estate built for miners and their families in the form of red brick houses in the era of the greatest industrialization of the region at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. One of the most desired places of photographers 8 km from the city centre. The estate is still inhabited and the full of character pubs contribute to its extraordinary feeling. Nikiszowiec has been recognized by the President of the Republic of Poland as a historical monument.

Spodek

Has UFO landed in Katowice? Until 2014, the Spodek Arena, with its steel dome weighing 300 tons, was the largest sports and entertainment hall in Poland with seats for 11,500 viewers. The iconic symbol of Katowice, sited in the central point of the city, clearly resembling a spacecraft after landing, was built in 1971. An interesting aspect is that the first concert of Metallica in Poland took place in Spodek in 1987.

Kościuszko Park

The park, which was established in 1888 in the style of English parks, can boast the only parachute tower in Poland, which was used to train parachute jumpers until the 1950s, as well as the oldest church in Katowice - the Church of St. Archangel Michael from 1510. There are about 90 species of trees and shrubs to be admired in the park.

Silesian Park

The complex of the park is situated on the border of Katowice and Chorzów on an area of ​​620 ha, which means that it is the largest park in Europe, after Phoenix Park in Dublin, and at the same time twice as large as Central Park in New York. There are a number of exclusive attractions in the Silesian Park to make a visit remarkable like Legendia Śląskie Wesołe Miasteczko (Poland's first funfair), the largest planetarium and the third largest zoo in the country.
