The island of Kos offers a number of different holiday regions, all of which have their own charm and are located in coastal regions. The interior of the island is inhabited, but has less to offer from a touristic point of view. Both in the north and in the south there are wonderful corners with fine sandy beaches, lively or somewhat quieter town centers and a wide range of accommodation for every type of holiday.

What is Kos best known for?

If you are planning a summer holiday on Kos, you should plan a journey of discovery along the sandy beaches of the island. Kefalos, Thermik, Agios Stefanos and Mastihari have fine sandy beaches and are generally quieter. Not far from Mastihari is Tigaki and Marmari, which are among the most visited holiday regions on the island due to their water sports and best beaches. The interior of the island is slightly higher and steeper, while along the coastlines the clear sea water invites you to take a dive. Kos, the birthplace of Hippocrates, has a deeply rooted history. From ancient times until today it has been populated by different civilizations and cultures, each of which has left its mark. Worth seeing when visiting Kos town is the ancient Agora, the Casa Romana, the Neratzia castle and the ancient temple of Asklepieion.

Kos Beaches

Beach
Kos Beach Kamari Beach
Kamari Beach

Kamari Beach is located in the south of the island in Kefalos Bay. It is characterised above all by its length and width, which makes it a popular destination for beach lovers. The crystal clear waters invite you to bathe for hours. The great view of the bay can be enjoyed from the adjacent restaurant, especially with a cozy snack.

Kos Beach Lambi Beach
Lambi Beach

Due to its proximity to Kos Town in the north-east of the island, Lambi Beach is just as popular with local residents as it is with holidaymakers and therefore offers a good touristic infrastructure. Whether you're looking for a good gastronomic offering, comfortable sun loungers or water sports, everything is available at Lambi Beach. The beach has lively but also quieter sections. It is ideal for walks and it is also worth coming here in the evening. The day can be rounded off perfectly with chilled music and a cocktail in one of the numerous bars.

Kos Beach Paradise Beach
Paradise Beach

This true paradise is located in the south of Kos and is one of the main spots for daily visitors in summer. Paradise Beach has established itself as a popular place, especially for holidaymakers with rental cars, because there are no hotel complexes directly adjacent to it. There are sun loungers and water sports on offer and the Paradise Beach restaurant also offers drinks and food for your gastronomic well-being. Its shallow entry and fine sand make the beach particularly suitable for smaller children.

A classic Greek dish is the gyros, which is made of well-seasoned pork that is grilled on a large skewer and cut into thin slices directly on the grill. Gyros is often served with coleslaw and tzatziki or as a pita in a bread bag with a delicious garlic sauce and salad.

Kos Culture

Castle of Antimachia

A journey back in time awaits you with a visit to the Castle of Antimachia, a fortress that is standing completely lonely on a hill above the Kardamena Bay. For a long time it served as a place of refuge for the population to get to safety from enemy attacks and to defend themselves from here. People lived here until the middle of the 18th century, when the area of the castle was no longer sufficient. The area is a bit overgrown, but the way up here is certainly worth it, since the view over the bay is just wonderful. There are traces of the former residents to be discovered everywhere and two small churches are even freely accessible.

Kos Culture Kos Town
Kos Town

The island's capital, Kos Town, is located in the north-east and is ideal for both holiday and day trips. In the historic old town there are buildings with Ottoman and Venetian architecture. With the Asklepieion, the town hosts the most important ancient site of Kos. This attraction is located only 4 km outside of the city on a hill and offers a beautiful view of the coast on a clear day. Further important archaeological sites in the city are the Casa Romana, the Altar of Dionyssios and the Odeon.

Kos Nature

Salt lake Alikes

The natural phenomenon Alikes is only 15 km away from Kos Town. As a home and nature reserve for countless species of birds, including flamingos, the salt lake offers a wonderful backdrop. Until the nineties there was still salt works here, but this is now closed. The best way to get to the Alikes is by car via a somewhat difficult road. Since the lake is often dry in summer, the best time for a visit is in spring and autumn.

Kos Nature The mountain village of Zia
The mountain village of Zia

The mountain village of Zia is the highest place in Kos. Although the village is quite small with just more or less a hundred inhabitants, it attracts visitors from the coastal regions every year. You can also eat typical food of the island here. A stroll through the small alleys creates a very special holiday atmosphere. The beautiful view and the pure nature up here is unique and will ensure unforgettable moments.
